What Does 'VU' Mean at the End of Every Panel Number on Airbus Aircraft?

Image Description - Various Panels in an Airbus Aircraft

In every Airbus aircraft, each panel is called a VU, which stands for 'Virtual Unit'.

Each Virtual Unit (VU) serves as a main control box that manages specific functions of the aircraft systems, especially in Airbus's fly-by-wire technology. Fly-by-wire means that the aircraft is controlled electronically rather than through traditional mechanical linkages. This allows each VU to integrate multiple controls into a single unit, streamlining the pilots' and engineers' tasks.

The idea of using virtual units and fly-by-wire systems originated in the 1970s, with significant contributions from Airbus, particularly in the development of the A320. This innovation not only enhances the aircraft's safety and performance but also simplifies operations, allowing for a more efficient flying experience overall.

(Note: Usually, the VU designation is written in BLUE on the Right-Upper Corner of the Panel)
